Touch Pictures

Happy Monday! Today we started to learn about our five senses. We learned that they are seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting. Our focus was on the sense of touch today.

The letter Tt was introduced.  Touch and tongue both start with letter Tt! We practiced making the /t/ sound while tracing over tiger t.

The story we read was called Lucy's Picture. In the story, Lucy did not want to paint a picture like her friends. Instead she wanted to glue different items on for her grandpa. Lucy spent the day collecting a variety of different materials to use on her collage, such as sticks, feathers, cloth, and sand. At the end of the story, Lucy's grandpa had to see the picture with his hands because he was blind. We spent some time talking about how he had to use his sense of touch as his eyes.

We used a touch bag today to practice using our sense of touch instead of our eyes. It was tricky figuring out what was in the touch bag when we couldn't use our eyes! All of the items in our touch bag began with the letter Tt! There were items such as a tiger, turkey, turtle, telephone, tea kettle, toilet, tub, table, teddy bear, and so much more!

Then we made our own touch pictures at the table. As we added each item, we closed our eyes and touched our paper to see if we could figure out what everything was. Some of the items we used were sandpaper, Easter grass, cottonballs, feathers, cellophane, and even flower fabric! We were not able to bring them home today because they were still wet. The touch pictures will come home with your child tomorrow.

Today was also vision and hearing screening. While waiting our turn, we used our sense of sight to look at I Spy books. It was a little tricky to find all the objects that were hiding in the picture. The children groaned when it was time to put away the I Spy books. If there was a vision or hearing concern, you will receive a letter in mail.

Due to vision and hearing screening, we had a silly, mixed-up schedule and did playtime after snack today. During playtime, we started working on coloring coffee filters to use for the feathers in our turkey Tt's for our alphabet books. After coloring them, we sprayed them with water. We used our sense of sight to watch the colors move when the water was sprayed on them! Another new toy was Mr. Potato Head. We had to make sure he had all of his 5 senses when playing with him! In the sensory table, we had floral water beads. They absorb water and get bigger. The children had a great time playing with them, as they have a unique texture. They are cold and slimy! There was a lot of arguing over whose turn it was to play in the sensory table. These floral water beads are not easy to find so if you come across any, we would greatly appreciate more in our classroom! :)
