PJ Day!

Hello 4K Families!

We had a great start to the week! The main focus of this week will be our names! Many of the activities that we will have throughout the week will be related to our names and the letters in our name.

At sign-in today, we introduced journals. One day each week, your child will get to journal. Our journals consist of drawing a detailed picture. Then we write about the picture. Right now, the teacher is doing most of the writing with the children helping to fill in some of the letter sounds they hear. Later in the year, it will progress to your child doing more of the writing. Some children have also begun to work on learning how to write their last names at sign-in! We are very excited about our new sign-in sheets!

Today we learned a new letter, the letter Nn! We met our friend Nighttime Nn. We all said "hi" to Nighttime Nn by tracing the letter and saying the /Nn/ sound. We also read the story The Napping House. The children enjoyed hearing this story and learning about Nighttime Nn while they were in their pajamas!

We also played a name game on the SMART Board. Each child's name appeared on the board, one letter at a time. As each letter appeared we tried to figure out whose name it was. This game helped to teach us that we have to look at more than just the first letter to figure out whether or not a word really is our name.

After opening circle, we did a large group activity together. Each child was given a piece of paper with their name written on it in rainbow letters. Their job was to tear long strips of colored paper into small pieces to glue on each letter. They had to be sure to glue the correct colored paper to the same colored letter. All of that tearing was a lot of work; it helped us to strengthen our fine motor skills. The children enjoyed seeing their final masterpiece after all of that hard work!

While they were working, Mrs. DeKeyser called over children to help roll out sugar cookie dough and cut out different letter cookies. Each child made an Nn, for our letter of the week, and chose another letter to cut out. The children enjoyed these for snack!

We had a busy playtime! There were many fun things that the children could do today. Some children played in the sensory table. This week to reinforce the letter Nn, the children could make number necklaces. Some children even had the opportunity to make their own name necklaces to take home. Each child will get a chance to make a name necklace sometime this week. They were very proud of their name necklaces!

During closing circle, we read the story, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and There Were Ten in the Bed. All of our friends had the opportunity to act out There Were Ten in the Bed. They loved being able to act out this story with their friends! We did a lot of counting with this song! Check out your child's folder for some "Five Little Monkeys" activities to do together at home!

Reminders:

You child must be coming to school with a winter coat, mittens, and hat. It is cold outside and unsafe for your child not to have appropriate outdoor clothing!  You are welcome to send an extra hat or mittens/gloves to keep at school as a spare in case your child forgets to bring one of those items to school.

Book orders are due tomorrow.

Have a great night!
