Germs, Germs, Germs!

Happy Wednesday! Today we continued to talk about the five senses. After reviewing our five senses with the song we learned yesterday, we spent some time learning about handwashing. The story we read was Those Mean, Nasty, Dirty, Downright Disgusting but Invisible Germs. We learned that there are good and bad germs. They are so tiny that we cannot see them with our eyes - that is why we say they are invisible. Germs are everywhere around us. We learned that there are all different types of germs, such as sore throat and earache germs. The worst germ of all is the throw-up germ!

How do we get rid of those nasty germs? The children thought that handwashing would help, but we learned that not just handwashing gets rid of bad germs - you also need to dry your hands because germs like wet, warm places. We spent some time practicing how to wash our hands. Did you know that you should sing the ABC song while washing your hands to make sure all the germs are off? We also learned how to wash between our fingers, the backs, and the fronts of our hands to make sure we find all the hidden germs! Some time was spent talking about not playing in the bottom of the sink or the garbage cans where there are lots of germs.

We used special germ stickers to stick on a picture of a classroom to show places where one might find germs.

Then we visited centers. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.

At the first center, the children used their sense of smell to paint a smell booklet. They had to match the smell with the corresponding picture. When dry, the children can scratch and sniff each page!

At the second center, the children made a five senses headband. They love how silly they look while wearing their headbands!

At the third center, the children played sound lotto while listening to different sounds, such as a doorbell, clock, vacuum, and telephone. Then they made sound shakers. Tomorrow we will use our sound shakers while dancing to "The Freeze." Each child chose an item to place in the sound shaker, such as beans, rice, noodles, or pebbles. It was interesting to listen to the different sounds that each item made.

After centers, we had a great time playing! The afternoon session discovered the beanbags and practiced tossing them onto their matching color on our classroom carpet. There was a lot of laughter during playtime today!

To end the day, we spent some time practicing our holiday songs. Almost all of the songs have now been introduced. We are so excited to sing for you!
