At center time, we visited another center. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
The first center completed a family journal page. We are working on learning that pictures match the words to tell a story. On our family journal page, we drew pictures of our family members and then helped label each family member to make a connection between the print and the picture. We also practiced making detailed drawings of our family members, using more than 6 body parts, such as a head, eyes, nose, mouth, body, legs, and arms. The song "Mat Man" is being used to help us remember the body parts we need to draw when we make a person. The family journal page will be shared with you at conferences!
The second center reviewed the shapes and the letter Hh while making another page for our alphabet books. We glued different shapes on the letter Hh to turn it into a house. Then we colored a person to look like ourselves and helped write about how we can be a good friend to others. This picture will be made into a class book for our classroom library.
The third center made a Dinofours counting booklet. It was fun stamping the correct number of dinosaur friends on each page! See if your child can read the booklet to you at home!
The fourth center completed another nursery rhyme page for our notebooks. We hunted for the letter Hh in "There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe." Then we spent some time reviewing the nursery rhymes we have already learned. Please make sure to review the nursery rhymes at home each week. Memorizing nursery rhymes is an important early literacy skill - and a skill that is currently being assessed on the PALS assessment!
Then it was time to develop important social skills while playing! The children have been enjoying washing dishes in the sensory table this week. Playdough has also been in high demand and some children have been enjoying building big houses out of blocks. During playtime this week we are also working on making pig and wolf masks to use to act out the story of The Three Little Pigs on Thursday! Sorry that there are not any playtime pictures from today.
After snack, we spent some time talking about emotions. We learned about the Safe Spot that we have at school. It is a special spot we can go to when we are feeling sad or upset to help us calm down. At school, we are working on learning some strategies for learning how to handle our emotions. As these strategies are taught, they will be visually placed in the Safe Spot to help remind us of different techniques that will help us calm down.
The story we read was If You're Angry and You Know It. We learned that if we are angry instead of pushing, hitting, kicking, yelling, or being mean to others, there are other things we can do. Some ideas that the story gave us were to bang a drum, find a new friend, tell a friend to stop, take a deep breath and count to three, and so much more! We will be practicing using strategies that are helpful and not harmful when we are upset at school. Hopefully with time you will also notice your child using some of these strategies at home too!
Then we acted out different emotions while singing the song "Mood Medley," which is similar to "If You're Happy and You Know It." We pretended to be happy, sad, scared, surprised, excited, sleepy, angry, and several other emotions! What fun!
Your child may come home and mention that we are learning Christmas songs at school. We are beginning to practice some of the songs for the upcoming holiday program. The children are very excited about it! They are being encouraged to keep the songs secret so we can surprise you - we'll see how long the secret can be kept! ;)
Please remember to make sure your child gets plenty of rest tonight as we will continue with the PALS assessments tomorrow.
