Oviparous Animals

Happy Tuesday! Today we learned all about animals that hatch from eggs! There is a special, big word that we use for animals that hatch from eggs - oviparous. Ask your child to tell you what oviparous means.

To gather the children's prior knowledge, we brainstormed a list of animals that hatch from eggs.

During circle time, we read The Golden Egg Book. In the story, a rabbit discovers an egg and tries to imagine what is inside the egg. There were a lot of laughs because the rabbit thought an elephant or even a boy would hatch from the egg. The children thought this was funny because they know that people and elephants do not hatch from eggs!

Then we read the story Hatch. This story was a riddle book. The children had to listen to clues to figure out which animal was hatching from the egg. We had so much fun with the riddles that Miss McCabe shared a few more riddles of animals that were not in the story, but still hatch from eggs.

Today we did a large group project. The children cut out a Humpty egg. Then they had to think about what animal Humpty would be if he never fell. The children had to secretly draw an oviparous animal inside the egg and whisper the animal in a teacher's ear. Then the children helped write the animal they drew inside.

After everyone was finished, we gathered together and each child got to give clues about his/her animal while our friends guessed what animal was inside the egg. This activity helped with the development of our language skills as well as our thinking skills.

The afternoon class also colored their Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme page.

We enjoyed playing in the classroom. This week we have an Egg Diner in the dramatic play area. There are also Easter eggs and grass in the sensory table. The children enjoyed opening the eggs to discover that there were dinosaurs hatching from the eggs! Some children also cut out Humpty Dumpty's body parts and then tried to put him back together again! In the morning, several children also enjoyed putting together eggs by matching uppercase to lowercase letters.

After snack, we sorted animals on the SMART Board by whether they hatch from eggs or do not hatch from eggs. We learned that animals that do not hatch from eggs are called viviparous.

Then we did some dancing with egg shakers. It was a lot of fun!
