This week we will be talking about different kinds of bugs. Today we talked about how an insect is a type of bug that has 6 legs, antennae, and 3 body parts.
We read the story The Very Ugly Bug. This story was about a bird that wanted to eat different kinds of bugs. We learned that each bug has a different way of protecting itself. In the book, we saw that some bugs used camouflage, one had wings to fly fast to escape predators, and one did not look very tasty. The children were very excited to see how the different bugs were able to escape from the bird.
The children sorted insects from bugs and animals that were not insects on the SMART Board. They had to tell how they knew the animal was an insect (6 legs, antennae, 3 body parts) or was not an insect (only 2 legs, no antennae, etc.).
This week we will be having centers Monday-Wednesday. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
At the first center, the children made caterpillar using pom poms and a clothespin. Then each child put it into a paper bag chrysalis and hung it in the classroom. The children are excited to see if their caterpillar will turn into a butterfly! After making their clothespin caterpillar, they made name caterpillars. They had to figure out how many letters are in their last name. Then they picked out different colored circle to create a patterned caterpillar. After gluing the circles together, the children finished their caterpillar by writing one letter of their last name on each of the circles and adding a face and antennae to it!.
At the second center, the children colored coffee filters using markers. One of the coffee filters will be used as a butterfly for a butterfly life cycle booklet that they will be making on Thursday. The other coffee filter is for a future surprise! The children enjoyed spraying the coffee filters with water and watching the colors bleed together.
At the third center, the children made secret number lady bugs. First they listened to the stories The Very Lazy Ladybug and Ladybugs. Then the children cut out the parts of a ladybug and assembled it. Each child was given a secret number that is written under the wings. The children put the corresponding number of dots on the ladybug and then tried to see if their friends could guess the correct number. They had so much fun tricking their friends.
Playtime! Some children enjoyed creating bumblebee art projects!
In the morning, we celebrated Pandora's birthday. Happy Birthday, Pandora! Thanks for the special treat!
During closing circle, we read the story Over in the Garden. This was a story about different kinds and numbers of bugs. There was a hidden number on each page. The children were excited to find the number on each page!
We also played a game about who "eight" the bug. There was a ladybug that traveled around the circle and as the ladybug was passed, every child had to say a number. We counted up to the number eight. The child who said eight, "ate" the bug and was out. We continued to go around the circle until only one person did not eat the bug. This game required very good listening skills so they knew what number they had to say. They had a blast! We all enjoyed laughing about getting to eat a bug! Miss McCabe was saved from having to eat the bug because she was the last remaining person in both classes! :)
