Needs of a Plant

Happy Tuesday! Today we continued to learn about plants and flowers. Our focus today was on the needs of a plant. We read a silly story titled Grow, Flower, Grow! during opening circle. In the story, a girl has a tiny sprout and wants it to grow. She starts to feed it pizza, ice cream, spaghetti, and even a dog bone, but the sprout will not grow. Finally, she gets upset and throws it outside. While outside, the sprout gets rained on. Sun shines on it and the wind blows on it. When the girl goes outside, she has discovered that the sprout grew into a beautiful flower!

The story led into a discussion about what a plant really needs to grow. We learned that plants do not need people food. Instead, there are five things a plant needs to help it to grow: water, air, space, sun, and soil/nutrients. We watched a special song on the SMART Board to help us remember the needs of a plant. We also did a few activities on the SMART Board to reinforce the needs of a plant.

The children rotated to a different center today. Ask your child which center he/she visited.

The first center put together the parts of a flower and then made a pattern out of the flower petals. In the center, the children wrote their first names. Then the children wrote their last names on the petals.

The second center used watercolor paints to paint rainbow Rr's for the alphabet books. Then they went on a flower letter hunt around the classroom.

The third center made shape flowers. They cut out various shapes to create a flower with a stem, leaves, and petals. Then they counted how many of each shape they used and recorded it on a piece of paper.

During playtime, several children enjoyed playing in the Flower Shop. They did a nice job of taking turns being the workers and the customers. Other children enjoyed hunting for hidden caterpillars and butterflies in the flowers in the sensory table. Several children also chose to paint giant tulips at the easels. Yet others chose to play some flower games on the SMART Board. We were very busy at playtime today!

During closing circle, we made a book about what flowers need to grow. Ask your child to read the booklet to you at home tonight!
