This week during sign-in, we worked on making name rainbows. Each day the children had to write their name with a different color marker to create a rainbow. Then the children colored over with a crayon. Today was the final step of making the name rainbows - cutting them out, gluing them onto construction paper, and adding cottonball clouds. They turned out great and will be added to your child's portfolio, which your child will bring home at the end of the school year for you to keep.
During circle time, we read a story that helped us learn more about clouds. We learned that clouds are made up of tiny drops of water. We also learned that there are many different types of clouds.
We did a little science experiment today to learn about why it rains. Everyone gathered around a jar that had a shaving cream cloud on top. We added tiny drops of food coloring "water" to the cloud. Guess what happened when the cloud got so full of water that it could not hold anymore - it rained! There were a lot of "oohs" and "aahs" as the children watched the rain fall down in the jar! Then we tried it with a different sized jar to see whether or not the same thing would happen. It still rained. Of course, the children wanted to do it over and over again so we added a new color of water. They loved watching the beautiful colors rain down from the "cloud" and also liked seeing how the colors mixed. We came away with the understanding that it rains when clouds are so full of tiny water drops that they cannot hold anymore.
Then we visited centers. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
The first center listened to the story It Looked Like Spilt Milk. Then the children made their own "spilt milk" clouds. After writing their names, they added some white paint to some blue construction paper. The children folded the paper and rubbed. When they opened up the paper, they had a new "spilt milk" cloud design. The children helped record what they thought their cloud looked like. There were a lot of creative ideas!
The second center did some wind experiments. They had to try to blow different objects and then recorded whether or not they were able to blow them. Some of the items that they tried blowing were a feather, rock, block, and cottonball. In the afternoon, the children also completed their umbrella Uu alphabet page.
The third center played a weather beginning sounds game with Miss McCabe. The goal was to get to the pot of gold at the rainbow. Each child got a special die to use. Each die was programmed with numbers that each individual child needed to work on. We worked on counting together as we moved spaces. The children also reviewed colors while playing the game and worked on taking turns. After moving the correct number of spaces, the children got a special card. They had to name the 3 items on the card and identify which two items started with the same sound. Miss McCabe also had them identify the letter that made the sound and come up with other words that started with that sound. The children enjoyed this game and Miss McCabe had a hard time being able to trick them! They are getting too smart! :)
Then we spent some time playing. The children have been enjoying pouring water and building with the pipes in the sensory table this week. There has been much laughter as they have discovered new and exciting things that the water can do when they build new structures and add funnels.
At closing circle, the children listened to another story about a little cloud.
Then the children played a cloud shape game on the SMART Board. Their job was to figure out which shape the kite was hiding under. It would be of great benefit to review shapes with your child regularly even if he/she already knows them. We do not want them to lose the skill of being able to name their shapes due to lack of practice.
Please remember to send your child to school with warm clothing on Monday. We plan to go to the sugar shack in the school forest to learn how maple syrup is made. I am anticipating that it will be muddy so children must have boots. Thank you for your cooperation!
