During opening circle, we read the story Up, Down, and Around. This story focused on vegetables that grow under ground, above ground, around on a vine. We also read the story Gardener, Gardener. This book was very similar to the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? except that it focused on vegetables that grow above the ground or under the ground.
The children visited centers again. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
The children at the first center used our new listening center to listen to the song "Down by Bay." We looked at the pictures in a book and identified the rhymes we heard. The children also matched rhyming watermelons to create new silly rhymes to sing. Finally, each child illustrated his/her own silly rhyme to put into a class song book. We will sing through our class song book on Thursday once everyone has had a chance to complete this center.
The children at the second center worked on measuring different vegetables. They used unifix cubes to see how tall each vegetable was and recorded it on their recording sheets. This center worked on counting, nonstandard measurement, drawing identifiable pictures, sharing, and writing both numbers and words.
The children at the third center played a vegetable number Zingo game. Each child had a card with different types and amounts of vegetables. They took turns sliding the zinger and placing a number on the corresponding spot on their cards until each box was covered. We did a lot of counting at this center!
Today the children continued to do some vegetable print painting using different vegetables. They had a great time! Other children enjoyed finishing up some last minute special projects for their mothers.
During the morning closing circle, Elise's mom came into the class and taught the children how to say different colors in Spanish. The children were very excited to learn words in a different language! She will be coming in throughout the month to teach the children different Spanish concepts! Check your child's folder for the color words in both English and Spanish so that you can practice them together at home too!
The children in the afternoon session did the counting jar! They guessed the number of Fruit Loops in the jar. The children are getting very good at guessing!
Audrie, one of our afternoon friends, brought in a story to share with us. She brought in Eating the Alphabet. The children learned about many new kinds of fruits and vegetables that they had never heard of before! Thanks for sharing, Audrie!
