Today we were introduced to the number one. We read a story about the number one and spent some time talking about what the number one means. Some time was spent talking about number one and lowercase l. They both look alike! We spoke about when we ask for a number, that means the appropriate response should be one. When we ask for a letter, the appropriate response would be an l. We practiced this as it is sometimes confusing!
In the morning, we also learned a new song called "The Leaves on the Trees." Each child got a leaf. When their color of leaf was called, they got to come dance in the circle. It was a lot of fun!
Today we visited centers. Each child had the opportunity to visit one center today and we will rotate through the other centers tomorrow and Thursday.
At the first center, we read the story Brown Leaf, Brown Leaf and talked about the colors leaves can be in fall and the colors they cannot be, such as blue. Then we made our own leaf colors booklet to bring home. See if your child can read it to you when the booklet comes home! Spend some time having your child point to each word in the booklet as he/she "reads" it to you.
At the second center, the children worked on counting and number recognition. Each child got a tree with numbers all over it. We rolled a die and counted the dots. Then we had to find the corresponding number and mark it with a fall colored bingo blotter. When all the numbers were covered, we had a colorful fall tree!
At the third center, the children had two projects to do! The first project was to make a letter Ll page for our alphabet books. To do this, we made leaf rubbings for leaf Ll. Afterwards, we cut a leaf out of a coffee filter and used eye droppers to drop watercolor paints in fall colors on our leaf. They turned out beautiful and it was fun watching how the colors moved and blended together as we dropped them on the coffee filter leaves!
Some time was spent playing. The children enjoyed hunting for hidden objects in the leaves in the sensory table. Miss McCabe hid acorns, spiders, and all sorts of surprises in the leaves! In the afternoon session, playdough was also a popular choice.
For closing circle, we shared our letter Ll mystery bags. There were some tricky objects in the bags, such as a level, lizard, and lipstick! If your child did not get a turn to do a mystery bag yet, please do not worry! Your child will get a chance to do a letter Pp or Ss mystery bag in the upcoming weeks!
In the morning, we also had a little extra time to do our new favorite song - "Spooky Walk." We enjoyed pretending to be scared!
Please remember that tomorrow is Picture Day! Those students in the afternoon session will go to pictures right after lunch. Please be aware of what your child has for lunch tomorrow! We do not want your child's school picture to be ruined because of a spill at lunch!
