L is for Leaf!

Happy Thursday! Today was another busy day in 4K! We read the story The Biggest Leaf Pile. This story was about 4 different leaves that were good friends. One day the wind blew them into a large leaf pile. They began to fight over who should be on the top. Ask your child what jumped in the leaf pile! By the end of the story, the leaves realized that it didn't matter who was on top of the life pile and they were friends again. This story also helped us review the colors red, orange, yellow, and purple.

We got out our colored leaves and sang the song "The Leaves on the Tree" again! We love dancing and singing this song!

Then we used our colored leaves to do some rhyming. Miss McCabe said a word and the 4K students had to figure out which color leaf rhymed. For example, if we heard the word "bed," we were able to figure out that Miss McCabe wanted all the red leaves.

Afterwards, we visited our final center for the week.

The first center made a leaf color booklet.

The second center played a fall leaf number game. When your child brings it home, spend some time reviewing the numbers 1, 2, and 3 together!

The third center made letter Ll leaf rubbings and used eye droppers to watercolor paint colorful fall leaves.

We had a fantastic time playing in the classroom too! Now that we have settled into what school is like, the children are starting to discover more new play options, such as playdough and pegboards.

After snack, we did some SMART Board activities. First, we did some subitizing (instantly recognizing how many without counting). Miss McCabe showed a picture of a tree with leaves. We had to use our fingers to show how many leaves were on the tree. Then we sorted some pictures by whether they begin with the letter Ll or Ff.

In the morning, we practiced sorting leaves on the SMART Board by color, shape, and size.

In the afternoon, we made leaf pictures using our leaves from our walk in the woods. There were all sorts of creative ideas, such as a leaf bird, leaf girl, leaf dog, and leaf fire truck!

Next week we will spend some time exploring pumpkins!
