Today's story was Fire Drill. This story helped us review what to do if there is a fire practice at school. The afternoon session already had an opportunity to practice a fire drill in September and the morning session will get a chance to practice sometime in the near future.
We learned a song that helped us remember what to do if there is a fire. The song helped us to learn to get out and stay out if there is a fire. We should not go back inside to get a favorite toy if there is a fire. The song also helped us learn how to stop, drop, and roll if our clothes should catch on fire and how to crawl under smoke. We also spoke about finding our meeting place and what that is important. Spend some time talking to your child about a meeting place in case there is a fire. The meeting place can simply be a tree, mailbox, a neighbor's house, or any other landmark so you can all find each other and know that everyone made it out safely. We even have a special meeting place at school for our class!
Today we practiced how to stop, drop, and roll, as well as how to crawl under smoke. A felt flame was put on each child. The children had to stop, drop, and roll until the felt flame came off of their clothing. Then they crawled under the smoke to get out. It was a lot of fun!
Next it was time to visit centers. The children visited the remaining two centers that they did not visit yesterday. Ask your child which centers he/she went to today.
At the first center, the children made a rhyming firefighter book. See if your child can read it to you! Take some time to go over concepts of print. Can your child show you the title? Can your child point to each word/picture as he/she reads? Can your child identify the rhyming words in the book (hats/cats; fires/tires; alarm/harm)? Can your child find the letter Ff? These are all skills that will be assessed in 4K!
The second center reviewed the letter Ff while making their alphabet book page. They mixed red and yellow glitter paint to create orange flames. Then they added a firetruck and the letters Ff. Afterwards, children used magnifying glasses to find hidden letters in a fire safety picture. It was tricky!
The third center played a fire hydrant game. We learned that fire hydrants hold water. Firefighters connect their hoses to the hydrants to get water to spray on fires. This game was a great review of colors, counting, and one-to-one correspondence! The best part was putting out the fire at the end of the game!
The fourth center completed a Jack Be Nimble nursery rhyme page to add to our nursery rhyme booklets that will come home again on Thursday! We worked on identifying words that are the same and different.
Afterwards, we played in the classroom. The fire station is in high demand! The children are enjoying putting out fires around the classroom! They are such great helpers!
In the afternoon session, we celebrated Mrs. Deprey's birthday and had some special treats! We even gave her a special card that we made for her birthday!
To end the day, we read Firehouse! and learned the song "Hurry, Hurry, Drive the Fire Truck."
In the morning session, we had a little bit of time to begin sharing our mystery bags. Each child will get an opportunity to do the mystery bag sometime this month. Each week, a few students will get chosen to find objects that begin with the letter we are currently learning about to place in the mystery bag. This is a good language activity. The child has to give clues about the object in the bag for their friends to guess. Tomorrow we will finish the mystery bags for this week. If your child did not receive one yet, don't worry! One will be coming home in the near future! In today's mystery bags, we had all sorts of letter f items, such as a flashlight, firetruck, flower, french fries, and flags.
