We got to walk to the apple orchard! Everyone did a fantastic job of remembering to stop, look, and listen before crossing the road.
When we arrived, we got to visit the back of the shop to see how they polish and sort the apples. There was a big machine. When it was turned on, the apples came out and were polished by the machine. Then they went up a conveyor belt and that's where a person sorts through them to make sure there are no bruises before sorting them into containers.
Next we got to see how apple cider is made. There was a machine that was very loud! We had to cover our ears.
The best part was tasting the apple cider! It was delicious! Many children asked if they could have more.
The last part of our field trip was walking out to the apple orchard. We got to see the apple trees with different types of apples. Each child got to choose which color apple he/she wanted to pick off of the tree. We learned that when picking apples, one should not just pull the apple from the tree. Instead, it is important to lift the apple up and twist so as not to damage the apple or cause bruises.
Then we walked back to school and ate our tasty apples that we picked for snack.
Today we also worked on making a thank you card for the orchard. The children helped brainstorm what to write on the card and we wrote our message together. Then each child made a fingerprint apple and signed his/her name on the card.
We also spent some time playing in the classroom. In the morning session, several children chose to paint with apples during playtime. They had a great time making apple prints!
To end the day, we read a silly apple story. It was about a hedgehog that got an apple stuck on it. The apple just would not come off. As other animals tried to help the hedgehog, other items also got stuck on poor hedgehog. Finally, a goat came up with a solution and saved the day! Ask your child what the goat did!
In the afternoon session, we also did some songs and dancing.
Today we also did book check-out. Please keep the book and nursery rhyme notebook inside the book check-out envelope. That way the materials do not become lost or damaged. The entire envelope with all of its contents should be returned to school each week.
I hope to see some familiar faces at the Haunted Mansion this weekend! The 4K teachers are working hard to fundraise money and I hope that you will be able to visit us to help support the 4K program! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
