We learned a new letter today, the letter Ss! We talked about our silly socks. Each child was given a sock and they had to sort their sock by their pattern. Some students were given striped socks, others were given solid colored socks, and some students were even given spotted socks. We read some Ss books to reinforce our new letter. We also got to meet sparkly silver Ss. Every child got to trace the Ss with their finger while they made the /s/ sound.
One of our stories today was Smelly Socks. It was a silly story about a girl who did not want to take off her socks! They became VERY SMELLY! Hopefully all of the students in 4K will remember to wear different socks to school tomorrow! We do not want a smelly classroom! :)
The number 2 was introduced today. We learned that another word for two is a pair. Another story we read was A Pair of Socks. This story also helped us practice finding items that match and identifying items that do not match. See if your child can tell you what a pair means!
We had new centers today! Children will rotate to one center each day. Please ask your which center he/she visited today.
At our first center, the children made spider web names. Each child traced his/her name in a spider web using liquid glue. Then they sprinkled glitter on it. They loved shaking the glitter off and seeing their name all sparkly on the web. Then they finished their web by adding a spider with 8 legs! Afterwards they went on a number/letter spider scavenger hunt around the room. They enjoyed looking for spiders around the room and couldn't wait to share with their friends where they found the letter and number spiders.
The second center that the children visited was the spider Ss alphabet book page. The children made thumbprint spiders on the letter Ss. Then they had to draw 8 legs on each thumbprint spider. When the children were finished making their letter Ss alphabet book page, they made a scarecrow happy booklet. We read the book together and identified emotions that the scarecrow was having. We drew faces on the scarecrows to show how they were feeling. We also talked about some of the rhymes that were in their booklet. If your child was at this center, please read this book together at home so they can show you their hard work!
The last center that children rotated to was the Itsy Bitsy Spider nursery rhyme page. Their job at this center was to go on an Ss hunt. They had to circle all of the S's in their rhyme. The children completed this page for his/her nursery rhyme folder. Please make sure you review these nursery rhymes with your child when your child's nursery rhyme folder is sent home along with their book check-out.
We read the book and sang the Raffi song Spider on the Floor together. Each child was given a spider ring to place on certain body parts throughout the song. The children were so excited when they found out that they got to keep their spider ring! The morning session sang some other silly spider and spooky songs too!
Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep tonight, as tomorrow we will be doing PALS testing. PALS is the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening. Testing will occur this week and next week. Assessment results will be shared with you at conferences. There will be a substitute teacher in the classroom as the assessment is done by the classroom teacher with each child individually.
