Garden Tasting!

Welcome back 4K families! I hope you had a delightful weekend! We have an exciting, eventful week ahead of us! This week is fire prevention week. We will be talking about fire safety all week. 

During our opening circle, we learned a new nursery rhyme! We learned Jack Be Nimble!  We also introduced our first letter of the year, Ff! As we introduced the letter Ff, the children got to feel our feather Ff and make the /f/ sound. We also read some books that focused on the letter Ff. All week we will be talking about fire safety, firetrucks, and firefighters. 

Each of the children were given a feather and we sang a feather song, which focuses on colors and body parts.  The best part was blowing the feather in the air and trying to catch it at the end of the song!

We also played an Ff game today. The children pretended they were firefighters. They had to put out all sorts of fires. Some of them put out flower fires, flag fires, fence fires, and even flashlight fires. They enjoyed putting out these fires and acting like firefighters! 

Your child visited two centers today and will be visiting the opposite two centers tomorrow. Ask your child which centers he/she visited today. 

The children at the first center made a firefighter rhyming booklet. Each child glued the correct pictures on each page in the booklet, completing the rhyme. Please read this booklet at home with your child to practice rhyming and concepts of print!

At the second center, the children started by creating a fire scene by painting with red and yellow glitter paint to create orange flames. They finished their picture by adding a fire truck and the letter Ff to their scene. This is the first page that will be filed away for their alphabet booklet. After they finished their Ff page, the children used magnifying glasses to find hidden letters in a fire safety picture.

    The children at the third center played a fire hydrant game. Each child rolled the dice and moved his/her fire truck the correct number of spaces. They tried to be the first to put out the fire while working on color identification, one-to-one correspondence, and counting.  

      At the last center the children completed his/her Jack Be Nimble page for his/her nursery rhyme notebook,while also working on phonological awareness skills with the nursery rhyme. We worked on identifying words that were the same and words that were different within the rhyme.

We enjoyed pretending to be firefighters at playtime!

After playtime, the children attended our school garden tasting. We have a school garden on the side of our school. Children last year had an opportunity in late spring to help plant vegetables. Today we got to try some of the vegetables that were grown in our very own garden! We tried carrots, cherry tomatoes, dried zucchini, dried tomatoes, and even zucchini bread. The children loved this experience!

After snack we read the book, Alphabet Rescue, and enjoyed finding the letter Ff in the story. We also participated in a Jack Be Nimble name activity. We switched out Jack's name with our own names. For example: Susie be nimble, Susie be quick, Susie jump over the candlestick. When the children heard their name today, they had to try to jump over a candlestick. They thought it was very silly to hear their names in the rhyme! 

**Our folders are full of fun projects that your child wants to share with you! Please be sure to check your child's folder each day. Take out everything in their folder and send them to school with an empty folder. 

In your child's folder today, there is an Ff book. If your child colors the book and reads it with you at home, they can bring their folder back to school to get a sticker on it!
