Fall Walk in the Woods!

Welcome Back 4K Families! We hope you had a great weekend!

This week we will be talking about all of the fall changes around us! We started out our 4K day by learning about the letter Ll. We read several books that emphasized this new letter we learned. The children had the opportunity to say "hi" to letter Ll by making the /l/ sound as they traced down the letter.

After learning about letter Ll, the children did an activity that focused on our new letter. Each child had to climb up a ladder, pick a leaf off of a tree, and lay the leaves in a line on the floor. After all of the leaves were laid in a line on the floor, the children each got to lay next to the line of leaves to see which was longer: themselves or the line of leaves. They had lots of fun learning about the letter Ll!

Next, we read the story We're Going on a Leaf Hunt. After reading our book we went on a walk in the school forest. We looked for signs that fall is here. Each child was given a bag to collect leaves, acorns, and pine cones. All of their bags were full of leaves of different colors, sizes, and shapes! All of the items we collect will be used for a project that we'll be making later in the week. Our special helper, Mr. Kluth, showed us some fun things today too! He showed us some mushrooms and we learned that there are different kinds of mushrooms. We found some very small mushrooms and some very big mushrooms. We also learned about what spores and sink holes are! We saw deer tracks on the path, but unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to spot one. We found some ferns and a few of our friends pointed out that fern starts with an Ff, which was the focus letter for last week! We also found a few holes in different trees. We talked about what kinds of animals might live in those holes. We had a very fun time enjoying the beautiful day! Ask your child what he/she saw on our walk in the woods.

We also had a little picnic lunch on the picnic tables right outside the school forest. Our morning friends enjoyed a special treat for Troy's birthday and our afternoon friends had fruit snacks! It was exciting eating in a new spot! Thanks for the special treats, Troy! We hope you had a fantastic birthday!

The children in the morning session had some extra time when they got back from their walk. They read the story Leaf Man. We will be making special pictures out of the leaves and different nature items we collected in our bags during our walk in the woods. The children started discussing some different things that they could make using their leaves.
The children in the afternoon session will get the opportunity to read this story and do their project later this week!

Have a great night! :)

  1. You are a wonderful teacher, Miss McCabe. It is nice to see someone take such an interest in the education of our children.
