Umbrella Uu

Happy Monday! Today we started our spring unit. This week we will be talking about the signs of spring and weather.

During circle time, we read The Rain Came Down. In the story, everyone is in a bad mood because it is raining. After the sun came out again, everyone was in a better mood. We talked about how the rain makes us feel. Some children said that it made them feel sad because they could not play outside. Others said that they feel happy when it rains because they like to splash in puddles or get to watch a movie inside. We also talked about the two things needed to create a rainbow - sun and rain.

We drew a picture and helped write about what we like to do when it rains.

This week, we will focus on the rhyme "It's Raining, It's Pouring." We read a version of the rhyme together that introduced many different types of weather.

The children were also chanting the rhyme of "Rain, Rain, Go Away" so Miss McCabe surprised everyone and got out a book of that rhyme to read too!

We also practiced clapping syllables. Each child got a turn to have his/her name clapped. We counted how many claps each child's name had. This would be a great game to play together at home. Say a word or name and ask your child to tell you how many claps long the word is! This game helps a child to stretch out words and hear the parts of a word, which will help your child with reading and writing next year.

Instead of centers, we did a large group project today. We made a rain positional booklet. The children practiced pointing to words with one-to-one correspondence while reading each page. Then each child drew raindrops in the correct place on each page in the booklet. On the last page, the children had to draw a self-portrait of themselves staying dry. Some children drew umbrellas, rain hats, or even a roof over their head on this page. There were some creative ideas! While waiting a turn to read the booklet to a teacher individually, children colored a "It's Raining, It's Pouring" nursery rhyme page for his/her nursery rhyme notebook. Make sure to have your child read his/her rain booklet to you tonight!

Then we played. During playtime, children were called over to sign a thank you card for our Altrusa visitor. This week will be her last time reading in our classroom. The children also enjoyed building with the pipes and pouring water in them at the sensory table.

At closing circle, we learned all about the letter Uu. We read some books that introduced different words that start with our new letter. Our new letter friend is umbrella u. Each child got a turn to say "hello" to umbrella u by tracing it and making the short /u/ sound.

Then children made their own umbrella Uu alphabet book page. We ran out of time for this project in the afternoon session so we will squeeze it in sometime this week!

Have a great evening! :)
