Our story was Little Quack. This is a great counting story! Today the children helped with the story. Each child was given a pond and 5 ducklings. As the story was read, the children listened carefully and placed the correct number of ducklings in the pond. Then they helped count how many ducklings were in the pond and how many were left in the nest. They were great helpers with the story and it was fun for them to have their own manipulatives to act out the story and concretely figure out how many were left in the nest.
We also worked on listening to the beginning sounds. Each child was given a duck with a picture on its belly. The children had to say the word pictured on the duck's belly and decide whether or not the picture started with the /d/ sound. If it started with the /d/ sound, they placed it on the pond shaped like the letter D. If it did not, the duck could not go in the D pond.
We visited centers again today. Ask your child which center he/she visited.
The first center read different versions of 5 Little Ducks. We discussed similarities and differences between the stories - and enjoyed singing the song of "Five Little Ducks." Then we made our own duck counting booklets. The children had to write the number on each page and count the correct number of ducks into each pond. After completing the booklet, the children practiced reading it to Miss McCabe. See if your child can read you his/her booklet when it comes home!
The second center did some feather painting! They cut out a duckling and colored its beak and feet. Then the children helped the duckling grow some new grown-up feathers! Instead of using a paintbrush, the children painted new feathers on their ducklings using a feather as a paintbrush.
The third center played duck rhyming memory. They practiced taking turns and paying close attention to help them find rhyming matches. We have some great rhymers in 4K!
Then we played. The children have been enjoying playing with all their favorite toys after being away during spring break. There has not been one area that has been especially popular this week. The children are just enjoying exploring all the areas.
After snack, we made some duck stick puppets. We will use the stick puppets on Thursday to go along with a special story!
Tomorrow is our Frozen classroom party! The children are very excited for it! :)
Please note that we had planned on going for a walk in the woods tomorrow. At this time, it does not sound like we will be making it out to the woods tomorrow and will have to postpone our pond visit until sometime in April when we have better spring weather!
