Our story today was titled The Little Snowflake. As we read the story, we practiced counting the sides of different snowflakes to help us realize that all snowflakes have 6 sides. We also looked at the different snowflakes pictured in the story to make sure that they all looked a little different. We were excited to go outside to play today so we could build our very own snowman!
Today we also played a snowflake number game on the SMART Board. We had to try to figure out which number snowflake the snowman was hiding behind. Our elf friend was even playing on the SMART Board today! He found a nice spot on top of it to watch all the activities we did at school today.
We visited another center today. Ask your child which center he/she visited.
At the first center, we played a snowman concept game. This game works on concepts, such as counting objects and identifying shapes, numbers, and letters. There are also silly action cards mixed in to help us get up and moving. The children's favorite card was the rabbit where they got to hop around the table and collect everybody else's card! They also enjoyed the snowball treat card - a mini marshmallow!
The second center focused on our new letter - igloo Ii. We had to cut out several rectangles, which is the shape we are focusing on this month, to glue on an outline of the letter Ii. Then we used a special sparkly, glitter paint to cover the Ii and make it sparkle like snow. Afterwards, we glued different shapes to make a snowman.
The third center made a shape snow scene. This center focuses on distinguishing between the rectangle and triangle shapes. Several children are struggling with this and it would be of great benefit to review the rectangle and triangle shapes at home! Then we got to paint snowflakes on our winter scene.
The fourth center got to use the winter stamps to decorate some paper. Then they played a snowball number toss game and recorded the numbers their snowballs landed in on a recording sheet.
We also enjoyed playing in the classroom! The styrofoam peanut color sorting has been popular. The salt trays at the writing table were also new. We pretended the salt was snow and used the eraser end of a pencil to draw and write in the salt. This is a simple activity you could also do at home to work on those important early writing skills! We also continued to work on making our name stockings so that they are ready in time for St. Nick. The children are hoping that he will come visit us at school and fill up our stockings!
In fact, the morning session had so much fun at playtime today, that they wanted to write about it during our daily message time.
Today we also spent some time practicing our holiday songs. There is even a snowflake song that we are enjoying learning for the holiday program!
