Freeze! Melt!

Happy Thursday! Today we continued to talk about snowmen. Our story was Sneezy the Snowman. In the story, Sneezy was freezing cold and wanted to warm up. He tried all different things to warm up, such as drink hot cocoa, sit in a hot tub, and stand near a warm fire. Unfortunately all those warm things kept making him melt. Fortunately he had some children that were good friends and helped him out!

We talked about the concepts of freezing and melting - and even practiced it in the morning! When we were frozen, we couldn't move. When the sun came out, we could move around again.

The song we have been focusing on this week is "Five Little Snowmen Fat" and is a great example of melting. We put on our winter hats and acted out the song. When a flashlight "sun" shone on one of our snowmen actors/actresses, they got to melt down to the ground. It was a great song to practice counting backwards (or taking one away). We had so much fun with this song that I am sure the children will be requesting to act out the song daily!

We also worked on developing our critical thinking and problem solving skills in the morning while playing a snowman game. There were several snowmen placed on the felt board. The children had to help me figure out which snowman was my friend Sammy. I gave clues, such as Sammy wears a purple hat or has gray arms. The children had to decided which snowmen did not fit the clue so we could take them off of the felt board. I continued giving clues until only one snowman was left and we then knew which snowman was Sammy.

Today we visited our final center for the week. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.

At the first center, we played a snowman concept game that focused on skills, such as counting and recognition of numbers, shapes, and letters. There were also silly action cards that made us laugh.

The second center made their igloo Ii alphabet book page and a snowman.

The third center worked on distinguishing between the triangle and rectangle shapes while making a winter snow scene.

The fourth center did some winter stamping and also played a snowball number toss game.

We spent some time playing in the classroom to develop those important social skills.

Today our elf friend had a special surprise for us - he left us the ingredients for making our own hot cocoa for snack! There was a special note that said he brought us this treat because we have been working very hard on learning our songs for the holiday program and he liked how we were being such good singers at school! Wow! That was exciting! We especially enjoyed adding the marshmallows to our hot cocoa - and were able to connect it to our story we read at school. If we were a snowman, we would want cold cocoa instead of hot cocoa so we would not melt! It was a delicious letter Cc snack - cocoa and cookies! Our new letter next week will be letter Cc so we briefly talked about how cocoa and cookies start with Cc today.

We also spent some time practicing our holiday songs - and we are sounding wonderful. We know that you will be very proud of our hard work when you come to our program! Please check your child's folder tonight for some important holiday program notes.

Remember that the gingerbread ingredients are due on Monday!

Enjoy the weekend! :)
