We had another very busy day in 4K! We continued to learn about the ocean and different animals that live in it. We started our day by coloring different ocean animals. We attached a stick to the back of them and we will use them to act out the song "Slippery Fish" tomorrow.
Our friends also listened to and learned the actions to the song "Slippery Fish" so that we could be familiar with the song before using our puppets tomorrow. The children enjoyed the song so much that they requested to sing it again - a sure sign of a great song! :)
The morning class got to meet Ms. Trista! Ms. Trista is a practicum student that will be spending time in the morning session three days a week. Today she read the children a book about herself. Each child received a book to follow along on the carpet and take home. Please take a look at the book tonight with your child!
We also read the book Tickly Octopus! We saw many ocean animals throughout the book. The book also helped us learn some interesting facts about the octopus. Ask your child what he/she learned about the octopus today. Did you know that they don't have any bones in their bodies so they can squeeze into small, tight places? We also learned that they spray ink when they are in danger so that they can escape from animals that might want to hurt them! The octopus is a neat animal!
Then it was time for centers again. Tomorrow we will complete the last rotation for the week.
At the first center, we made an ocean counting booklet. Each child's booklet had different numbers in it to challenge each child at his/her level. The children had to read the sentence, trace the number, and choose which ocean animal to stamp on the page. We did a lot of counting at this center! In addition, we worked on concepts of print while reading the booklet. Ask your child to read it to you when it comes home!
The third center worked on painting an ocean mural to display outside our classroom. We will make different ocean animals over the next few weeks to hang on the mural. While painting, the children needed to work together as a team to decide who would paint what part of the mural and what colors to use. We worked on using our words and manners at this center!
After centers we had playtime. During this time, many of our friends were busy making art projects for the mural outside of our room. Some children made starfish, jellyfish, and even stingrays! Oats were added to the starfish to make them feel bumpy like a real starfish. With the jellyfish, the children learned how to tie a knot - the first step in learning to tie our shoes! With the stingrays, the children were excited to use a brad to allow the tail to move. We are having so much fun creating different ocean animals at playtime!
Today we had Cheerios for snack. The children were excited to eat their "O's," which is the letter we are focusing on this week. During snack time, the children got to watch the aquarium webcam again! They love seeing the turtles, sharks, stingrays, and scuba divers!
At closing circle, we read the book Pattern Fish. After reading it, each child was given a partner and together they created patterns on the legs on an octopus. They had to use team work to create their octopus masterpiece!
