In the afternoon, we also worked on listening to the sounds at the start of words. Each child got a tooth and had to listen for the sound Miss McCabe made to see if the picture on their tooth started with the same sound.
Next we went to centers. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
At the first center, the children reviewed the letter Qq and made Queen Qq's for their alphabet books. We also worked on taking our time to color within the lines while at this center.
The second center played a tooth counting game. We learned that children have 20 teeth (10 on the top and 10 on the bottom). When we get older, we have 32 teeth (16 on the top and 16 on the bottom). Each child got a tooth mat. We took turns rolling a die and identifying the number rolled. Then we counted the corresponding number of teeth onto our mat. Play continued until the mouth was filled with teeth. Of course, the children could not resist eating some of the marshmallow "teeth" afterwards. We talked about how marshmallows are a "sometimes food" and the children promised to brush their teeth well tonight!
The third center got to practice brushing a tooth! We cut out a yellow tooth. Then we used "toothpaste" (white paint) and a toothbrush to make our tooth sparkling white and clean. While doing this activity, we practiced our toothbrush strokes of making small circles all over the tooth. Afterwards, we played "tooth war" to work on counting skills and identifying which amount is more.
Next was our favorite part of the day - playtime! We are enjoying making valentines for our friends and teachers in the Queen of Hearts Valentine Shop! I love all the writing I am seeing happening during play! Playing in the sensory table with soapy water, pretend "teeth," and toothbrushes is also a fun activity that the children are enjoying! The afternoon session also have been requesting to use the SMART Board at playtime. Today they played a tooth fairy color game on the SMART Board as an option during playtime. We also started to work on making our valentine totes for our classroom party next week!
After snack, we had a special visit from Dr. Rabbit. Unfortunately, he was unable to come in person but sent Miss McCabe a package in the mail. We got to see Dr. Rabbit on the SMART Board. He helped us to learn more about taking care of our teeth. Did you know that we even need to brush our tongues?! Guess what else was in the special package - a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a booklet to take home! We are very excited about the special gift from Dr. Rabbit!
In the morning, our friend Abby read us a special story all by herself! Way to go, Abby!
Tomorrow will be a busy day. We will have a special visit from our Altrusa friend. She will bring a special book to read to us. Each child will get his/her own copy to bring home and keep! We also will have a special visit from Midwest Dental. The children cannot wait for all our special visitors to come tomorrow!
