Today we spent some time reviewing the letter X - a pirate's favorite letter! Ask your child to tell you why the letter Xx is a pirate's favorite letter! We made our letter Xx alphabet book pages at arrival today. Everyone cut out an Xx and then glued it on a map to show where their treasure is buried. X marks the spot!
During circle time, we read the story How I Became a Pirate. In the story, a boy is excited to join a pirate crew. He has a lot of fun because pirates don't have to eat vegetables, use their manners, and can talk in pirate. By the end of the story, the boy realizes that being a pirate is not all fun. Pirates don't get tucked into bed or have bedtime stories to read. After reading the story, we talked about whether or not we would want to be a pirate. Most children agreed that it would be fun for a day, but not forever!
We learned a pirate song that had a lot of rhyming words in it. The song was called "The Day I Went to Sea." Check out the "Here's the Scoop" newsletter from Monday for the words to the song!
Today we rotated to a new center. Ask your child which center he/she visited today.
The first center played a life-size board game called "The Crocodile Mile." Each child rolled a die, identified how many dots they saw, and then moved the corresponding number of spaces. If the child landed on a crocodile, he/she had to complete the task written on the crocodile. The tasks involved math and literacy skills, as well as some silly actions! While playing the game, the children also got a chance to "walk the plank" (balance beams). At the end, we found an X and discovered some pirate treasure!
The second center played "Pop & Win Bingo" using pirate gold as bingo markers. This game was differentiated so that each child could work on the skills he/she needed to. Some children worked on uppercase letters, others worked on lowercase letters, and yet other children worked on beginning sounds. Upon winning bingo, each child got a chocolate gold coin as a prize!
The third center played an "X Marks the Spot" number race game. This game was also differentiated to allow each child to focus on the sets of numbers he/she needs work on. Each child rolled a number die, identified the number, and traced it on his/her sheet. It was a race to see which number would make it to the X first.
Then we spent some time playing. Hunting for buried treasure in the sensory table was popular again today. Some children also worked on making sea urchins and sea anemones out of playdough for art. The children were provided with different pictures and worked to make a 3-dimensional representation. They turned out neat and the children were proud of their hard work! Several children also chose to work at the writing center. They were busy making pirate treasure maps to follow!

In the morning, several children requested to build the letter X out of pretzels again during snack!
At closing circle, we worked on developing our writing skills while making a pirate booklet. On each page, the children had to choose a pirate object to draw. Then each child wrote the word for the object on the page. When the booklet comes home, have your child read it to you!
