Wintry Wednesday

Hello 4K Families! During opening circle, the children listened to the story The Very Hungry Bear. This story helped us to discuss similarities and differences between polar bears and brown (grizzly) bears.

After hearing this story, we talked about how most bears hibernate, but polar bears do not. Then the children got to make hibernation cupcakes. We made the batter together and then each child got to put their bear (teddy graham) to sleep. We talked about how the batter and cupcake liner is like a cave for the bear to hibernate in. The children used their learning to realize that it would not be a polar bear hibernating in the bear cave cupcakes!

Your child rotated to another center today. Ask him/her which center he/she went to.

The first center did some fishing and caught fish to feed to their polar bears. Some of the children had to identify the letter on their fish, while others had to identify the beginning sounds.

The second center did a polar bear number race game. As they rolled their die, they traced number. They were very excited to see which number would "win" and get to the other side of the page.

The third center played a polar bear iceberg board game that reviewed numbers and letters.

The last center reviewed the word "camouflage" that was introduced on Monday. They used their big muscles to tear paper to hide their polar bear cubs from the ice foxes!

Then we spent some time playing. The children enjoyed playing with the snow in our sensory table once again today!

We ate our delicious hibernation cupcakes during snack time! The children enjoyed finding the bear in their cupcake.

During closing circle, the children listened to two different stories about the Arctic. We read Over the Arctic and Way Up in the Arctic. We learned about some other animals that live in the Arctic with the polar bears. The books also helped us work on number recognition and counting skills! The children in the morning session especially liked Way Up in the Arctic because they had to find numbers hidden on each page in the story!

We also colored our Jack and Jill nursery rhyme page for our nursery rhyme book. We worked very hard on coloring within the lines. It is very important that you review these nursery rhymes at home with your child.

We had another great day! :)
