We started off the day by reviewing the letter Mm. Then we glued colorful mittens onto the letter Mm for our alphabet books. Some children even chose to make color patterns on their letter Mm's.
During circle time, we read the story Froggy Gets Dressed. In the story, Froggy does not want to hibernate like frogs are supposed to! Instead, he decides to go outside. First, he has to get dressed to go out in the cold. However, each time he makes it outside, his mom calls him back in because he forgot to put on some of his winter clothing. Each time, he has to go back inside, undress and then get dressed again. By the end of the story, Froggy was exhausted from getting dressed and undressed and decided that hibernating was better!
Then we sorted some pictures on the SMART Board of different types of clothing by whether or not they should be worn outside in winter.
We also worked on our rhyming skills using colorful mittens. I sang a song and the children had to figure out which color mitten rhymed.
Today we did a large group activity. We made a mitten counting booklet. The children had to trace the number and glue on the correct number (and color) of mittens on each page. To add an extra challenge, we looked for the color word on each page and underlined it. After making the book, we practiced reading to a friend and teacher. The children are very excited about being able to read the book to you tonight! Please take the time to listen to your child read it to you, also encouraging him/her to point to each word as he/she reads!
We also enjoyed playing in the classroom as we have not seen our toys in awhile due to all the cold days! Next week we will be doing some assessing for midterm reports, such as the self-portraits and academic concepts (colors, shapes, numbers, letters, etc.).
After snack, we did the counting jar. The children took turns guessing how many objects were in the jar while we recorded the guesses. We talked about making a guess that would make sense. Then we worked on rote counting the objects to see how many really were in the jar. In the morning, there was a treat for us! We had to use our math skills to figure out how to divide the treat equally so all the children got the same number. The children are excited for their turn to take home the counting jar and fill it with something special!
Next we read the story The Mitten. It was a fun story! The little boy loses his mitten and several animals decide to crawl into it to keep warm. The mitten gets very stretched out until there is only room for a tiny little mouse on the bear's nose. Ask your child to tell you what happened when the mouse crawled in!
Then we all got a turn to pretend to be one of the animals from the story. We used a mask and got to act out the story! We laughed watching how "the mitten" got bigger and bigger as each "animal" crawled in. What fun!
Please make sure to check your child's folder tonight. There are a lot of items in the folder. You will want to pay particular attention to the note about an upcoming 4K Family Movie Night to see Frozen!
