Our story today was The Emperor's Egg. We learned some interesting facts about Emperor penguins. See if your child can tell you something new he/she learned today. We learned that the dad penguins take care of the egg while the mom goes out to sea. He takes care of the egg by resting it on his feet. We also learned a new word - regurgitation. See if your child can tell you what that word means!
After reading the story, we practiced being mom and dad penguins. We found a friend. Each pair took turns being either the mom or the dad penguin. The dad penguins had to try walking with the egg on their feet. We found out that it is not easy to keep the eggs on our feet without falling off!
Fortunately, we all were good moms and dads because all of our penguin chicks hatched. They were all labeled with a letter that we had to identify before going to centers.
In anticipation of a cold weather day tomorrow, we only did 3 centers today. Ask your child which center he/she visited.
The first center read a penguin counting book and then caught number fish to feed to a penguin.
The second center read a penguin alphabet book and then worked to match uppercase and lowercase fish to feed to a penguin.
The third center used animal stamps to stamp on the letter Aa for their alphabet books. Then this center reviewed the letter P. They sorted penguins with letters on their bellies by whether or not they were a P.
Then we played. Several children chose to paint penguins at the easel. The sensory table was also in huge demand. There were penguins, water, shaving cream snow, and even icebergs! We got to watch the icebergs melt as the day went on!
During snack, we watched some real penguins on a webcam. Take some time tomorrow on the snow day to check out the penguins! You may even catch it at the time when the penguins are being fed! Don't forget to also check the underwater cams to see the penguins swimming! **Please note that not all the webcams work at night - they don't have night vision! These webcams are best viewed during daylight hours!

Then we learned all about our new letter Aa. We practiced making the /a/ sound while tracing over apple a.
We also did the counting jar in both classes today.
