Up, Up, Up, & Away!

Hello 4K Families! I hope you had a great weekend! We had a very busy start to the week. This week we are learning about air transportation. We are going to be focusing on airplanes and rockets. We started out our day by having calendar, reviewing our shape of the month - circle, and learning our new nursery rhyme - "Hey Diddle Diddle." We also read a book titled, Angela's Airplane. In this story Angela loses her dad at the airport. She tries to look for him everywhere, even on an airplane. She is all alone and can't resist pushing buttons. Before she knew it, she was flying the plane. The children enjoyed acting out the book using the items in our sensory table. This week our sensory table has toy airplanes and cotton balls for the clouds.

Our 4K friends had a lot of fun at our new centers. Ask your child which center he/she went to today.

At the first center the children colored their "Hey Diddle, Diddle" nursery rhyme page. They also played some fun rhyming games.

The children at the second center colored an astronaut's space suit with their favorite color. They also did some writing at this center. These pages that they made will be compiled into a class book. After they were done writing and coloring, the children played with space goop. Some of the children even wrote their names in the goop! They loved playing with this sticky goop and it was a fun way to work on their fine motor skills! The recipe for the goop is in the "Here's the Scoop" newsletter so you can make it at home with your child.

At the third center, the children used push pins to poke holes over their name. At home, they can flash a flashlight onto their page so they can see their name constellation on the ceiling. This was another great activity to work on their fine motor and name/letter recognition skills. They are very excited to see their names on the ceiling!

At the last center, the children played a Hey Diddle Diddle math game. Everyone was given a game board with ten moons on it. They rolled a die, and placed that many cows on each moon. They had to cover up all of the moons in order to win. They enjoyed counting out their cows and placing them on the moons.

After centers, we enjoyed playing with our friends that we missed over the weekend. During playtime, some of the children made shape rockets with Mrs. DeKeyser!

After snack, we danced to an airplane song. The children also had the opportunity to use the SMART Board today! They had to find a helicopter, which was hiding behind a cloud. They had to find which color cloud it was hiding under. We read the book, Airport. We learned a lot of special vocabulary words, such as pilot, flight attendant, and cockpit.  The AM session also read the book, We All Go Traveling By, which was a review of colors and different forms of transportation.

Children are welcome to wear pink to school tomorrow!

Have a great evening!
