Today was our last day of our transportation unit so we spent some time reviewing several different forms of transportation. Next week we will begin our fall theme, focusing on apples in preparation for our apple orchard field trip. We are in need of apples for our explorations next week if anyone would like to donate some! It would be great to have some red, yellow, and green apples! Next week will be a busy week as we will go on a field trip to the apple orchard, have a special visit from Altrusa, and mid-term progress reports will go home! We will also begin formally introducing letters this month. As new letters are introduced, your child will bring home a letter book to do together at home to help reinforce your child's learning at school.
Our story today was There Was a Bold Lady Who Wanted a Star. There were a lot of great rhymes in the story! We are getting so good at hearing rhymes! In the story, a lady wanted to go to outer space to get a star. She started out by walking, but soon discovered that would not work. She then tried many other forms of transportation, such as roller skates, a bike, a car, and an airplane. Finally, she discovered that a rocket would be the best option to catch a star. Ask your child why she wanted a star!
Then we sorted different forms of transportation on the SMART Board by whether they belong in the air, on land, or in the water. Every child got a turn to put one form of transportation where it belonged.
We visited the final center left from the week. One group worked on rhyming using the nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle, Diddle."
The second group made a page for our astronaut colors class book and then worked on developing fine motor skills while playing with space goop.
The third group worked on counting and one-to-one correspondence while playing a Hey Diddle, Diddle grid game.
The fourth group worked on letter and name recognition, as well as fine motor skills while using a push pin to make a name constellation.
We spent some time playing in the classroom and working on developing our social skills.
The morning session got to make their shape rocket snack today. Yum!
During closing circle, we read a silly story called How Will We Get to the Beach?. In the story, a girl loads up her car with all sorts of items for the beach. Unfortunately, her car won't start. She tries to take the bus, but not everything will fit on it. Each time she thinks she finds a new form of transportation to get to the beach, she discovers that she has to leave something else behind. The children enjoyed guessing what item she would choose to leave behind each time.
Then we learned how to play memory! We played a memory game where we tried to match a number with a card that had the corresponding number of objects. For example, children may count 2 trucks on one card so they would try to find the other card that had the number 2 on it.
In the afternoon, we also read our astronaut colors class book. It was sung to the tune of "Mary Wore Her Red Dress." We will place it in our classroom library so the children can read it daily.
Today was also the first day of book check-out! The children are very excited to show you the book they chose to bring home. In your child's book check-out envelope, there is also a nursery rhyme notebook. Please spend some time going over the nursery rhymes each night. Your child's book check-out envelope and nursery rhyme notebook needs to be returned to school by Thursday each week. You may return it sooner, but we will only do book check-out on Thursdays. If the book check-out envelope is not returned, your child will not be able to choose a new book until it is returned.
