Today was a day spent learning routines and how to do different tasks at school. We learned how to line up and walk in a line. I was impressed with how quietly the 4K students walked in the hallway today! They did a great job of walking quietly so as not to bother others who were working in their classrooms! We even learned a silly way to sit on the carpet! Miss McCabe calls it "criss-cross applesauce." See if your child can show you how to sit criss-cross applesauce tonight!
After learning the rules for the bathrooms and washing hands, one of our first tasks was to learn how to do sign-in at school. Each day we sign-in by writing our names on a piece of paper. Later in the year, the sign-in will progress to writing our last names and eventually change into a journal where children will draw a picture and help to write about their picture by writing the sounds they hear.
Miss McCabe loves to be silly! Today we read a silly story about Froggy's first day at school! We saw some similarities to our first day too! Ask your child to tell you what was silly in the story!
We did a large group project today and made some school buses! For several children, this was their first time using a scissors! We learned a special song to sing while cutting. It was also exciting to learn a special "magic trick" today! We cut out one circle but two circles magically appeared when we were done cutting! The children were so proud of their school buses! I will place them in their portfolios as a special keepsake of their very first project at school and will share them with you at parent-teacher conferences!
Of course, we spent some time playing! Playtime is important in 4K because it helps us to work on developing important social skills, such as sharing, working together with others, and using our words. Children also learn important skills through play. It is a non-threatening way to work on many other skills, such as developing the muscles in our hands in preparation for writing and developing recognition of concepts like colors and shapes.
After playtime, we had snack. Later this week we will make some special mats to use at snack time that will help us work on counting and number recognition each day as we count out our snack onto the mats.
One of our daily routines is to spend some time looking at books as we finish snack. Everyone did a nice job of sharing the books and taking good care of them!
One of the songs we learned today was "The Wheels on the Bus." The children helped with the actions! See if your child can sing the song for you tonight!
Then it was time to play outside! I'm looking forward to another exciting day in 4K tomorrow! :)
