Hey Diddle, Diddle

Happy Tuesday!  Today we spent some extra time focusing on our new nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle, Diddle."  This is an important nursery rhyme for the children to become familiar with as it will be used to assess concepts of print in October.  We read the story Hey Diddle, Diddle.  There were a lot of rhyming words in the story!  It was an extended version of the nursery rhyme with a lot more verses!

Then we tried jumping over a moon!  We graphed whether or not we could jump over the moon on the SMART Board.  The children had to recognize their name when the teacher held it up, taking a running start, and try to leap over the moon.  It was trickier than it sounds!

Then we visited one of the centers that we did not visit yesterday.  Ask your child which center he/she visited today!

At the first center, we worked on rhyming.  The concept of rhyming will also be assessed in October.  We had to figure out which moon each cow belonged on by using our listening ears to hear pairs of words that sound alike, or rhyme.  Afterwards, we colored our nursery rhyme page for our notebook and practiced saying the nursery rhyme.  These nursery rhyme notebooks will come home in your child's book check-out envelope on Thursday.  Please make sure to return them in your child's envelope the following week so we can continue to add to them!  The children are very excited to bring their nursery rhyme notebooks home to share with you!  Please spend some time reviewing the nursery rhymes each night!

The second center worked on making an astronaut colors class book.  Each child colored a space suit a color and recorded their name and color on the page.  We can't wait until the book is completed so we can sing it together to the tune of "Mary Wore Her Red Dress."  Afterwards, we gave our hand muscles a work-out while playing with space goop!

The third center practiced counting and one-to-one correspondence while playing a Hey Diddle, Diddle grid game.  They had to roll the die, count the number of dots, and then count the corresponding number of cows onto each moon.  The goal is to cover each moon with a cow.  You can download a copy of the game to play at home by clicking here!

The fourth center worked on developing their fine motor skills, name recognition, and letter identification while making name constellations.  This is a very relaxing activity for many children.  They enjoy laying on the carpet and poking holes over the letters in their name.  It is exciting to lift up the white paper to see their name made out of holes on the black paper!

We spent some time playing and working on social skills.

During snack, we learned what a crater is.  We counted cereal craters onto special moon mats.  It was a lot of fun!

After snack, we went to the gym and played with the parachute.  We pretended we were astronauts jumping on the moon!  Everyone did a great job of taking turns making waves and being an astronaut!  There was a lot of laughter!

In the afternoon, we had time to read We All Go Traveling By.  You can listen to the story/song by clicking below!

Have a fantastic evening! :)
