At our opening circle, we read the book Dinofours: I'm Not Your Friend, written by Steve Metzger. We talked about how it is okay to have more than one friend and how we can be friends with everyone in our class. We also learned that we can play with different friends during playtime and that we do not always have to play with the same people.
Our 4K friends were introduced to "Mat Man" today. "Mat Man" is a song that teaches children how to draw people. Children can use the manipulatives to make a person. After learning how to make a person using the mapulatives, we learned that we need to remember all of the different body parts when we are drawing a person. After singing the song and making a person, we need to go back and add details like hair, buttons, etc. Some of our friends even got the opportunity to draw "Mat Man" on the SMART Board! Please check out the "Mat Man" song below.
Today we had new centers! Your child will rotate to one center each day. Ask your child which center he/she visited today!
At the first center, the children made their own Dinofours book. Each page says that one of the characters had a certain number of friends. Their job was to determine how many friends that character needed. They then used dinosaur stamps to stamp the correct number of dinosaur friends on each page. If your child visited this center today, please ask him/her to read you the booklet.
The children at the second center went on an Hh hunt throughout the nursery rhyme, "There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe." This nursery rhyme will be added to their nursery rhyme folder. After finding all of the Hh's, they reviewed the nursery rhymes that they've completed so far.
At the third center, the children completed a journal page about how they can be a good friend. The children had to think of a way that they can be a good friend. They also colored their picture. These pages will be compiled to make a class book. After they completed their journal page, the children made the Hh page for their alphabet book. They used shapes to make houses out of their letter Hh.
The children at the last center also completed a journal page. Now that our friends have learned a few different letters, we asked our friends to fill in the missing letter. Our journal said: This is my __amily. Many of our friends remembered feather Ff that we met a few weeks ago. After filling in the missing letter, they had to draw and color a picture of their family. Then we labeled each family member, which helps us to realize that what we write connects to the pictures that we draw. Our friends at this center also had to remember the different pieces of a body that we learned about in our "Mat Man" song while drawing pictures of their family members.
Playtime Fun!!!
At our closing circle, we learned about a new letter friend. We met Hairy Hh! We all said hi to Hairy Hh by making the /h/ sound. We read a couple of books about the letter Hh. We also got to ride on a horse while wearing a hat. We galloped around the room and when we came back to the front of the room, we had to think of a word that started with the letter Hh to tell the rest of the class, such as howdy, hello, or hooray. We had lots of fun learning about the letter Hh!
There will be a substitute teacher in the classroom for Miss McCabe the rest of the week so that we can complete the second part of the PALS assessment. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep!
Have a great night!
It is getting very cold out, please remember to send your child in a warm coat with mittens and a hat everyday!
